Ask a European software development agency for its day rate. Most of the time you will not get a number. You will get a qualification call, then a proposal shaped around what the agency believes you can spend. We took the opposite route: our rates are published on our site, from 150 to 450 EUR per day depending on the profile, and they feed our online quote builder directly. Every number in this article can be checked in two minutes.
Software development day rates in Europe usually live behind a contact form. Ours sit in a five-band grid: 150, 200, 300, 400 and 450 EUR per day. From bottom to top the price triples. This article explains what each band covers, where the spread comes from, and how to use published rates in a procurement grid or a public tender.
Some context before the numbers. We have shipped more than 17 projects for more than 10 clients, including a booking platform for airport parking we operate and an industrial platform we engineer. The model is hybrid: steering, quality and contracts in Belgium, an engineering center in Rabat. That structure explains both the level of the rates and the fact that we can publish them at all.
Why agencies hide software development day rates in Europe
Pricing on request is not an oversight. It lets an agency price the client instead of the work. A large account will pay more than a small company for the same day of the same profile, and nobody will ever be able to prove it.
For the buyer, that opacity has a very concrete cost. It takes weeks of meetings to get a first number. A shortlist cannot be built on comparable ground, because every proposal arrives in a different format with a different scope. And when negotiation starts, the agency knows your budget while you know nothing about its costs. The asymmetry always works in the same direction.
A published rate flips that relationship. You know the price before the first call. You can strike us off your comparison without ever talking to us. We accept that risk because the grid survives the comparison.
The grid: who works at 150, at 300, at 450 EUR
Each band maps to a specific profile and a specific level of accountability.
- 150 EUR per day: supervised junior work. Fully specified tickets, systematic senior code review, never alone on a scope. The right band for volume: integrations, screens, data migrations.
- 200 EUR per day: confirmed developer. Autonomous on well-framed features, ships without daily supervision, does not own architecture.
- 300 EUR per day: senior engineer. Owns a module end to end, reviews other people's work and answers for the technical choices inside that scope.
- 400 EUR per day: lead or architect. Settles structural decisions, runs a full workstream and reports directly to the client.
- 450 EUR per day: delivery accountability. This band carries the contractual commitment, the interface with your teams and the final call. It is the rate of the person who signs.
One point matters more than the rest: the 150 EUR band only exists because the 300 and 400 bands sit above it. We never staff a junior alone.
Which profile, not only which seniority
A tier tells you nothing about what the person does. Two confirmed engineers at the same rate can cover completely different disciplines, and it is the discipline that decides whether the reinforcement helps at all.
The profiles we staff, each from junior through lead:
- Full-stack engineer: Next.js, React, TypeScript, .NET, Node
- Backend engineer: .NET 8, C#, Node, PostgreSQL, SQL Server
- Frontend engineer: React, Next.js, Angular, TypeScript, Tailwind
- Mobile engineer: Flutter, iOS, Android
- QA and E2E automation engineer: Playwright, Cypress, CI integration, regression suites
- Cloud and DevOps engineer: Azure, Docker, Terraform, GitHub Actions
- Data engineer: SQL Server, PostgreSQL, Azure pipelines, ETL
- Software architect: distributed systems, integration, migration planning
Two of those are asked for far more often than they are advertised. The QA and E2E automation engineer, because a team shipping fast without a net ends up shipping slowly. The cloud and DevOps engineer, because the delivery chain is the bottleneck for half the teams we meet, well before the application code is.
A scarce or heavily demanded profile sits higher in the grid at equal seniority. Tell us the discipline before the seniority: it is the discipline that sets the useful rate.
Where the spread comes from: accountability as much as seniority
A threefold spread does not measure years of experience. It measures who answers when production goes down on a Friday evening, who owns a missed estimate, who carries the contract. At 150 EUR you buy supervised execution. At 450 EUR you buy a signature that binds us.
That is also why the top bands do not move in negotiation: steering and quality live there. A grid whose top collapses under pressure ends up funding its governance by inflating day counts. We prefer firm rates and honest timesheets.
The hybrid mechanics: contracts in Belgium, engineering in Rabat
Steering, quality and contracts sit in Belgium and Switzerland. The engineering center is in Rabat, within an hour of Brussels and Geneva time. Your daily standups happen during your office hours, with no lag to absorb.
This setup is what keeps the arbitrage alive. Plenty of firms advertise a low offshore rate, then add coordination layers billed separately, acceptance ping-pong and timezone delays. That hidden overhead eats the advertised saving. In our grid, the governance layer is already priced in: it is exactly what the 400 and 450 EUR bands pay for. A full pod, governance included, runs between 15 and 40K EUR per month depending on its composition.
Comparing a 350 EUR day with a 900 EUR local day
Take a real 70-day scope: 60 days of senior development at 300 EUR plus 10 days of architecture at 400 EUR. Total: 22,000 EUR, a weighted average of about 314 EUR per day. The same scope handed to a local contractor billed at 900 EUR per day costs 63,000 EUR.
The 41,000 EUR gap proves nothing on its own. The only honest comparison is on output: give both sides the same specification with written acceptance criteria, then compare what is delivered, tested and still maintained three months later. Few buyers run that exercise, because it requires numbers from both sides. With a public grid, half the table is already filled in.
Using published rates in a public tender or procurement grid
A published grid maps directly onto a procurement frame: profile, day rate, day count, total. For an evaluation committee it brings something rare: a price that was public before the procedure opened, identical for everyone, and checkable without contacting us.
Two scheduling anchors for your planning annex: a formal quotation is reviewed by an engineer within one business day, and the earliest project start is two weeks from the request date. You can write both deadlines into your file as they stand.
The honest limits
A public grid does not cover everything. Fixed-price work still needs a scoping pass, and the instant quote remains an estimate until an engineer has reviewed it. The 150 EUR band only makes sense under senior supervision: if the plan is to isolate a junior to shrink the invoice, we will decline the work. A two-week earliest start rules out 48-hour emergencies. And the timezone alignment is built for Europe: a team steered from the US West Coast would lose part of the advantage.
The rest is easier to verify than to read about. Describe your scope on jadev-corp.com/quote: the builder applies exactly the grid from this article, and an engineer reviews the formal quotation within one business day. The numbers you will see there are the numbers you just read.
