The question always lands at the same moment: the day the SaaS commission invoice grows past what a team would cost. Custom booking platform development cost is not a mystery, though. A booking platform breaks down into five technical blocks, each block is measured in days, and days multiply by a published rate. Our public grid runs from 150 to 450 EUR per day depending on seniority. The rest is arithmetic.
We write this from a specific position. We operate airport parking booking platforms in production, with iDEAL and Bancontact taking live payments and seasonal peaks that are very real. One word on the model, because it explains the grid: steering, quality and contracts stay in Belgium and Switzerland, engineering runs from our center in Rabat. That is what makes 150 to 450 EUR per day possible without giving up code review or on-call.
The SaaS ceiling: the moment building starts to make sense
A booking SaaS is the right way to start. You pay a subscription plus a percentage of every booking, and you take money in week one. The problem shows up with volume: the commission scales with your revenue while the service behind it stays the same.
The second signal is functional. Slot-based pricing, seasonal rates, controlled overbooking, resale channels, per-product cancellation rules: every request ends with the same answer, the feature does not exist. When you spend more time working around your tool than working with it, run the numbers: add up twelve months of commissions and hold them against the estimates below.
The five blocks of a booking platform
Every booking platform we have built, whatever the industry, reduces to the same five blocks.
- Inventory and availability. The source of truth: what is sellable, when, and in what quantity. It is the most underestimated block, because contention (two customers grabbing the last unit) has to be solved at the database level, never in the interface.
- Pricing engine. Prices by season, duration and channel, promo codes, negotiated corporate rates. Isolate it from day one: it is the block that changes most often.
- Checkout. The public funnel: search, selection, form, confirmation. Conversion lives here, so design and performance do too.
- Payments. Charging, refunds, accounting reconciliation. The subject deserves its own section, and it gets one below.
- Operator back office. What your team sees: schedules, bookings, changes, refunds, accounting exports. It is often half of the total effort, and almost always the part missing from a quote that looks too good.
Local payments are not a checkbox
iDEAL in the Netherlands and Bancontact in Belgium are not exotic extras. A Dutch customer who does not see iDEAL at checkout closes the tab. Both methods work by redirect with asynchronous confirmation: the customer leaves your site, pays in their banking app, and your platform learns the outcome through a webhook. That forces pending states into your booking model, idempotent webhook handling, a plan for the webhook that never arrives, and refund flows that behave differently from cards.
On a modern PSP, a clean iDEAL and Bancontact integration takes 8 to 12 days of a senior profile at 400 EUR per day, so 3,200 to 4,800 EUR, webhooks, refunds and reconciliation included. The amount is reasonable. What gets expensive is discovering in production what happens when the confirmation never comes while a parking barrier is waiting for a paid booking.
Custom booking platform development cost, phase by phase
Here is how we price it with our public grid. A month is roughly 20 working days.
- Single-operator MVP, 3 months. One lead at 400 EUR and two developers at 200 EUR: 800 EUR per day, about 16,000 EUR per month, around 48,000 EUR in total. Scope: one site, one inventory, one local payment method plus cards, a minimal back office.
- Full platform, 6 months. A lead at 450, a senior at 300, a developer at 200 and an engineer at 150 on test automation: 1,100 EUR per day, about 22,000 EUR per month, around 132,000 EUR. That buys seasonal pricing, cancellations and credit notes, accounting exports and observability.
- Multi-operator. The same pod plus one more senior at 300: 28,000 EUR per month over four to six additional months, so 112,000 to 168,000 EUR. The complexity sits in data isolation and payouts between operators, never in the screens.
These figures match our contractual reality: our pods run between 15 and 40K EUR per month depending on composition. If a vendor quotes you a full platform at the price of our MVP, ask which block disappeared. It is almost always the back office.
The run side nobody quotes upfront
The work does not stop at launch. Run covers hosting, monitoring, dependency updates and above all seasonal peaks: on airport parking, school holidays multiply traffic, and every minute of downtime is a booking made with a competitor.
Priced with the same grid: plan two to four days per month of an engineer at 300 EUR to keep the platform healthy, so 600 to 1,200 EUR per month, hosting excluded. Add on-call if bookings land at night and on weekends, which is true of anything connected to travel. Demand this line in the quote before you sign. Six months into production it is too late to negotiate it.
What we would tell you in a sales call: buy what can be bought
Custom does not mean rewriting everything. Even in a fully custom build we buy off the shelf: the PSP (nobody should handle raw card flows), email and SMS delivery, invoicing, authentication. The custom effort goes where your business is specific: inventory, pricing and the operator back office.
The other honest limit: if your volume does not yet cover the gap between twelve months of commissions and a 48,000 EUR MVP, stay on your SaaS. We would rather tell you that now than invoice you to prove it.
